Abstract

The gained awareness among consumers about environmental sustainability of agro-food products will drive suppliers to provide quantitative information on their resource use and its effects on the environment. The impacts of the water use in production systems are generally estimated by water footprint methods. The wine industry is a global sector which places a significant demand on the world’s water resources. Ischia viticulture has undergone over the years a considerable resizing. The wine production decreased from 2747 ha of vineyards (existing in 1929) to 900 ha in 1990, reaching in the last 20 years 300 ha. This decline was accompanied by an employment fall, from 3000 companies in the wine-growing sector in 1982 to only 454 nowadays. These are often small and medium sized family enterprises. The aim of the work was to assess the impacts of water use of grape-wine production on water resources for the Ischia Island. The functional unit was a 750 ml bottle of wine at the winery gate. Data were collected directly from 7 SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) , from both grape growers and wine producers of the island.
