The literature shows that nursing education in mental health is not sufficient and needs to be continuously updated, especially considering the emerging needs of the population. There is a growing debate about the educational level of bachelor’s degree courses, aimed to provide nurses with adequate tools for working in mental health. The aim of this contribution was to explore the educational programmes of several Italian universities, in order to highlight whether the curricula can be considered adequate or if there is a need for updates and improvements. A cross-sectional study was conducted, and a questionnaire was created and sent to the directors of the bachelor schools affiliated with the permanent conference of the bachelor’s courses of health professions. 116 directors participated. The questionnaire had good internal consistency (alpha=0.86) and satisfactory content validity (CVI-S=0.95). “Health legislation on the protection of mental health and psychiatry” (n=111) represents the most frequently found theoretical content in the educational programmes; the less explored topics are “Psychic disorders in offenders” (n=28), “Psychic disorders in the migrant population” (n=33). Clerkship is provided for 108 schools and is compulsory in 55% of them. 56% of the sample “quite” agree that the training offered in the bachelor’s school is adequate. The results suggest subsequent in-depth studies aimed at exploring the knowledge and perceptions of health professionals.
