The high number of commercial frauds in fish marketing requires rapid and cheap authentication tools. This work demonstrated the possibility to use IR spectroscopy for the discrimination between Atlantic mullet and red mullet fillets and for the identification of fresh-frozen fillets of Atlantic mullet. Both NIR and MIR spectroscopy gave excellent results. Applying LDA to selected spectral variables, a 100% of correctly classified samples in prediction was obtained both for species and status identification. Satisfactory results were also achieved with the use of SIMCA.

Abstract

The high number of commercial frauds in fish marketing requires rapid and cheap authentication tools. This work demonstrated the possibility to use IR spectroscopy for the discrimination between Atlantic mullet and red mullet fillets and for the identification of fresh-frozen fillets of Atlantic mullet. Both NIR and MIR spectroscopy gave excellent results. Applying LDA to selected spectral variables, a 100% of correctly classified samples in prediction was obtained both for species and status identification. Satisfactory results were also achieved with the use of SIMCA.
