The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two different diets (EC1: 11.7 vs. EC2: 11.2 MJ DE/kg DM), administered ad libitum (AL) or restricted (R, 35 g*BW0.75) on digestibility of nulliparous rabbit does during the last period of pregnancy. In particular, the trial was carried out on thirty-two hybrid nulliparous rabbit does of from the 20th to the 24th day of pregnancy. Digestibility values found in our experiment are low if compared with those reported in literature for non pregnant or lactating females, but consistent with those determined in pregnant rabbit does during the final 10 days of pregnancy. Digestibilities of nitrogen, carbon and energy differed significantly between diets, with the highest values for the does fed diet EC1, while the effect of intake level was never significant with the exception for nitrogen. Nitrogen balance was not affected by the diets and the intake level for the higher urinary nitrogen loss of diet EC2 could be due to the utilization of protein as energy source. The low feed intake and the decrease of the digestibility recorded in our trial suggest to feed nulliparous rabbit does with high energy diets already from the last days of pregnancy.
