Adaptation of the Ciuta Sheep to Milking Operations - The Ciuta sheep is a small, native breed from in the mountainous regions of Valtellina and Alto Lario. This study, conducted within the Val3Ciuta project, aims to assess the milking behavior and production of 10 Ciuta ewes from farms that are partners in the project. Observations included both first-lambing and multiparous ewes, which continued to nurse their lambs throughout the whole study period. The sheep were milked between February and April 2024 and showed an average production of 344.7±105.8 g/milking. Although milk yield was modest, it is important to point out that more than a month had passed since lambing (therefore milking occurred presumably after the production peak) for all the sheep included in the trial, and part of the milk was still being consumed by suckling lambs. Over time, milking duration decreased (from 515±51.45 to 462±53.61 sec.), as did the frequency of discomfort behaviors: for instance, weight-shifting decreased from 2.64±1.10 to 1.4±0.34/min, while head-turning and kicking behaviors almost disappeared (from 0.73±0.53 to 0.05±0.04/min and from 2.14±4.69 to 0.05±0.10/min, respectively). The results suggest that Ciuta sheep can adapt well to the milking routine. Furthermore, production levels showed a wide range of variation among the ewes, with the highest-producing individuals yield up to 747g/milking, which can be considered as a promising yield, if we consider that part of the milk was still being used by the lambs.
