The journey to and from the main universities (especially Bologna and Paris) often provides material for short fiction, starting with the “Novellino”, and highlights a widespread feeling of latent hostility towards aspiring or certified intellectuals, the “scolari”. This is shown in particular by two family sketches drawn by Sacchetti; while Masuccio's novella XLV, which narrates the ups and downs of a noble Castilian “legista” along his way to Bologna, bears out the implications of status connected to a stay in university towns. The second part of the contribution focuses on to the very famous novella of the widow and the “scolare” (“Decameron” VIII 7), also to investigate thematic and stylistic inconsistencies and genre excursions.

Abstract
The journey to and from the main universities (especially Bologna and Paris) often provides material for short fiction, starting with the “Novellino”, and highlights a widespread feeling of latent hostility towards aspiring or certified intellectuals, the “scolari”. This is shown in particular by two family sketches drawn by Sacchetti; while Masuccio's novella XLV, which narrates the ups and downs of a noble Castilian “legista” along his way to Bologna, bears out the implications of status connected to a stay in university towns. The second part of the contribution focuses on to the very famous novella of the widow and the “scolare” (“Decameron” VIII 7), also to investigate thematic and stylistic inconsistencies and genre excursions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
