Descrivere, narrare, interpretare. L’ekphrasis nel “Museo di Reims” di Daniele Del Giudice

The article examines the nature and the functions of ekphrasis in Nel museo di Reims, a short story written by Daniele Del Giudice. I briefly discuss some critical points in the theory of ekphrasis starting from Spitzer and Heffernan. Then, I consider how ekphrasis is a fundamental pattern of this work, where pictures are used to characterize the characters and to reveal the dynamics of their relationship. I will also emphasize the importance of not considering ekphrasis as a ‘description’, because it should be seen as a complex relation of description, narration and interpretation. Finally, I attempt to show that Barnaba and Anne have different relationships with the paintings ; this is a key point in order to understand the end of the story.

L’articolo propone una riflessione attorno alle forme e alle funzioni dell’ekphrasis in un racconto di Daniele Del Giudice, Nel museo di Reims. Inizialmente si discutono alcuni nodi teorici del concetto di ekphrasis a partire dalle definizioni di Spitzer e di Heffernan. Si procede poi ad osservare e dimostrare come l’ekphrasis in questo racconto sia un elemento strutturante, in quanto motore narrativo o mezzo per caratterizzare i protagonisti e per determinare la relazione che si crea fra i due. Dall’analisi del racconto emerge quindi come l’ekphrasis non possa essere considerata soltanto nei termini di una ‘descrizione’, ma si trovi piuttosto al centro di una complessa dinamica di descrizione, narrazione e interpretazione. Si mostra infine come i protagonisti intrattengano un diverso rapporto con i quadri, punto centrale per comprendere la chiusura del racconto.
