Until 2005 the breeding of pulses (excluding soybean) had limited genomics resources and molecular breeding was difficult. During the last decade international research led demand-driven innovations in genome science and managed to translated the large genome information in breeding. For instance, largescale genomic resources including draft genome assemblies, comprehensive genetic and physical maps, thousands of SSR markers, millions of SNPs, several high-throughput as well as low cost marker genotyping platforms have been developed in pulses. It has been possible to map several breeding related traits, and translational genomics have become available in these legumes. The targeted traits include enhanced drought tolerance, enhanced and pyramided resistance (for example to Fusarium wilt and Ascochyta blight), and improved seed quality (for example in groundnut). This article describes the most recent trends in pulses molecular breeding and future research and development scenarios.
Fino al 2005 il breeding delle leguminose da granella (escludendo la soia) ha potuto contare su ridotte risorse genomiche e molecolari. Negli ultimi 10 anni è stato possibile tradurre l’enorme mole di informazione genomica in breeding. Per esempio sono state realizzate mappe genetiche e fisiche ad alta densità che hanno permesso di mappare decine di caratteri importanti per il breeding. Queste attività hanno permesso di sviluppare linee superiori con caratteristiche di tolleranza alla siccità, e “accumulo” di geni utili per le resistenze a patogeni (per esempio fusariosi, Ascochyta, ruggini) e per aspetti qualitativi (per esempio la qualità dell’olio in arachide). In questo articolo si riportano i trend più recenti del breeding molecolare in leguminose da granella, e si descrivono i futuri scenari di ricerca e sviluppo.
