Per una storia della città di Odessa

The interest in the history of the port city of Odessa, from its foundation in the eighteenth century to the present day, has experienced a recovery in the last thirty years which produced a significant increase of the bibliography on the origins of the city and its development, on its peculiarities compared to other cities of the Russian Empire, first of all its multi-ethnic and multicultural character, its function as an intermediary between Russia and abroad. This attention for Odessa, which focuses on the period between the 19th and 20th centuries, is characterized by a vein of “nostalgia” for a supposed past golden age compared to the tragedies of the 20th century and the difficult post-Soviet situation, which assumes the features of a “myth”, especially at the level of popular cultural dissemination. The article offers a survey of this bibliography, and proposes, for the period between the 18th and 19th centuries, a reading of the history of Odessa, which takes into account the archival resources of the Italian pre-unification States, with particular regard to the Archive of State of Turin, where a significant part – and worthy of an in-depth analysis – of the documents of the Consulate of the Kingdom of Sardinia in Odessa (1816-1859) is preserved.

L’interesse per la storia della città portuale di Odessa, dalla sua fondazione nel XVIII secolo ai giorni nostri, ha conosciuto una ripresa nell’ultimo trentennio che ha portato a un significativo incremento della bibliografia sulle origini della città e il suo sviluppo, sulle sue peculiarità a paragone di altre città dell’Impero russo, prima fra tutte il suo carattere multietnico e multiculturale, la sua funzione di intermediaria fra la Russia e l’estero. Questa attenzione per Odessa, che si focalizza sul periodo fra ‘800 e ‘900, è connotata da una vena di “nostalgia” per una supposta età dell’oro rispetto alle tragedie del XX secolo e alla difficile situazione post-sovietica, che assume le vesti di un “mito” soprattutto a livello di divulgazione. L’articolo offre una ricognizione di questa bibliografia, e ripropone, per il periodo fra il ‘700 e l’800, una lettura della storia di Odessa, che tenga conto delle risorse archivistiche degli Stati preunitari italiani, con particolare riguardo all’Archivio di Stato di Torino, dove si conserva una parte significativa – e meritevole di una analisi approfondita – dei documenti del Consolato del Regno di Sardegna (1816-1859).
