«Chi fà da se fà per tre» : forme e modi di dire nelle grammatiche per le scuole elementari (1880-1906)

In the grammar book, which is responsible for codifying the physiognomy of the national linguistic standard and therefore crucial in the formation of linguistic identity, phraseology contributes to outlining an ethical system for newborn Italians. This paper investigates which identity profile produces the set of phraseology and idioms contained in a sample of grammar books for elementary schools, published between 1880 and 1906, and heterogeneous by methodology. In addition to verifying the quality and quantity of the idiomatic inserts, evaluating them in diachrony, the investigation intends to detect their possible use for language teaching purposes. The analysis conducted shows that the grammar books spread the Italian phraseological heritage, bending it to more needs. Phraseology could be used in daily conversational speech; at the same time, it was used to exercise grammatical knowledge and to focus, thanks to the particular structure of proverbs, precise linguistic structures (such as correlations or relative sentences), together with some residual forms in the language. Secondly, phraseology has an additional modeling function of the desired and expected identity of the exemplary Italian subject, routed since childhood to the values of Smilesian self-helpism, substantially preserved until the early twentieth century.

Nel libro di grammatica, deputato a codificare la fisionomia dello standard linguistico nazionale e perciò cruciale nella formazione dell’identità linguistica, il complesso fraseologico contribuisce a delineare un sistema etico di riferimento per i nuovi italiani. Il presente contributo indaga quale profilo identitario produce la seriazione di idiotismi e modi di dire contenuti in un campione di grammatiche per le scuole elementari edite tra il 1880 e il 1906, eterogenee per metodologia. Oltre a verificare la qualità e la quantità degli inserti idiomatici, valutandoli in diacronia, l’indagine intende rilevare l’eventuale loro impiego a fini glottodidattici. L’analisi condotta mostra che le grammatiche considerate diffondono il patrimonio fraseologico panitaliano piegandolo a più esigenze: prima di tutto glottodidattiche, offrendo del materiale spendibile nel parlato conversazionale quotidiano, nel contempo sfruttato per esercitare il sapere grammaticale e per focalizzare, grazie alla particolare struttura dei proverbi, precise strutture linguistiche (come le correlazioni o le frasi relative), insieme ad alcune forme residuali nella lingua, sedimentatesi proprio negli idiomatismi; questi ultimi, in secondo luogo, hanno un’ulteriore funzione modellizzante dell’identità auspicata e attesa del suddito italiano esemplare, instradato sin dall’infanzia ai valori del self-helpismo smilesiano, sostanzialmente preservato sino al primo Novecento.
