The figure of Inge Schönthal Feltrinelli stands out in the panorama of Italian and international publishing. After a career as a press photographer (her pictures of Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, Greta Garbo, Fidel Castro are famous), she became a publisher. First alongside Giangiacomo Feltrinelli (whom she married in 1959 and with whom she created a vast network of international editorial relations), and later alone, when she took over the publishing house during the “Years of Lead”, after the sudden and tragic death of her husband (14 March 1972). She was famous for her impeccable receptions, friendly lunches, and sumptuous parties, but also for her passion for dance and her brightly colored clothes. She should rather be remembered for her total commitment to the promotion of culture and her ability, in both photography and publishing, to capture the “decisive moment” and successfully lead the Feltrinelli publishing house through the most difficult years.
