An analysis of the sentences issued in 1385 by the Podestà of Milan confirms the importance of the lexicon used by the authorities in the “construction of the enemy”. At the same time, it is clear the importance of judicial communication in the coercion of the society in this case in relation to the roles assigned to each gender. Among the defendants are represented various social segments and different conditions, even if described in a stereotypical manner. The picture that emerges, although it includes some clichés, however, also reserves some novelties: the awareness of some women regarding their rights and abilities, including the public display of their opinions that make them successful, although sometimes not in court. What emerges in the language of the podestaril curia, alongside the condemned women who act “inspired by the devil”, is therefore the presence of women who are not submissive, endowed with economic capacity and the ability to defend their prerogatives.

Abstract
What emerges in the language of the podestaril curia, alongside the condemned women who act “inspired by the devil”, is therefore the presence of women who are not submissive, endowed with economic capacity and the ability to defend their prerogatives.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
