The essay proposes a reading of Chapter XXIV of the Promessi sposi in which the intertwining of multiple genres of the novel is highlighted, as a demonstration of Manzoni’s modernity in modulating the novel form. Whereas the paradigms of the historical and educational novel remain in the background of the chapter, aspects of Romanesque, humorous and psychological novel are recognized. We can also identify genres other than the novel, such as the fairy tale and the proverb, whose popular matrix lends itself to direct speech and to the thought of low-class characters. We focus in particular on the figure of the tailor, to show how, despite his communication failure in front of the cardinal, the writer values his rhetorical skills, making him a commendable model of narrator
Il saggio propone una lettura del capitolo XXIV dei Promessi sposi in cui è posto in evidenza l’intreccio di molteplici generi del romanzo, come dimostrazione della modernità di Manzoni nel modulare la forma romanzesca. Mentre i paradigmi del romanzo storico e di formazione rimangono sullo sfondo nel capitolo, si riconoscono aspetti del romanesque, del romanzo umoristico e di quello psicologico. Si individuano anche generi diversi dal romanzo, quali la fiaba e il proverbio, la cui matrice popolare si presta al discorso diretto e al pensiero dei personaggi umili. Ci si sofferma in particolare sulla figura del sarto, per mostrare come, nonostante il suo fallimento comunicativo di fronte al cardinale, lo scrittore ne valorizzi le capacità retoriche, facendo di lui un modello di narratore.
