Objectives: The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the clinical effects of the surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion, with emphasis on the issues that are still unresolved and on the areas in which general consensus has been reached. Materials and methods: Research was carried out to define the field of interest of dentists specialized in the field of orthodontics. Eighty-seven orthodontists were then asked to specify the main questions they had about this procedure, and the ten most frequently cited questions are included in this report. To answer these questions, the authors reviewed the available literature in the PubMed© database. Results: Several aspects of surgically assisted expansions have been analyzed, including the effects of the procedure, the types of device and surgical techniques used, and measures adopted in the management of cases. Conclusions: The literature appears discordant on several aspects of the treatment. There is no correlation between stability and the type of device or surgical technique used.
