The article deals with Ms. Laur. 69.30, the most ancient complete manuscript of Philostratus''Lives of the Sophists, never fully collated by the last editor K.L.Kayser and here for the first time examined as a whole. As the analysis demonstrates, the manuscript tradition proposed by the 19th century scholar is not valid anymore: Laur. 69.30 (third family) shows conjunctive errors and common lacunae with the so-called second family. The article also documents the history of the partial collation with unpublished material, mainly from the Kayser''s letters, and aims to illuminate the methods of a pre-Lachmanian philologist.
