Mucosal Disease (MC) is a contagious severe bovine disease due to Pestivirus inducing a major cause of economics loss in cattle industries. The aim of this communication is to give an immunoistochemical detection of viral antigen in animal tissues and to evaluate the relate immunodepltion. Nine bovines (15 days to 18 months old) with MD and 2 (pneumonia and paravertebral abscess) were necropsied. Samples were taken and histological (HE) and immunohistochemical processed using antibodies against BVDV, CD79 (B lymphocytes), MAC 387 (macrophages), MHC II and HSP72. Morphologically scattered alimentary tract erosions and ulcers and severe lymph nodal follicular necrosis were observed. Immunohistochemistry epithelial BVDV expression was detected and loss of CD 79+ cells in lymphoid tissue follicular centres was observed. Reduced epithelial and lymphoid MHC II expression and increase of enterocytes HSP72 expression were also detected. The BVDV expression only in the epithelial cells is consistent with a protracted infection. Further studies are required for a better comprehension of the real role of viral induced cytokines release in the lymph nodal follicular necrosis pathogenesis.
