In the lectures held in Rome and in Liège in 1960, Leo Spitzer identifies the main change of his criticism in a movement from psychological stylistics towards a more organicistic or «structuralist» view. This reconstruction can still be agreed to, granting that we correct its excessive a posteriori straightforwardness, towards structuralism, and that we point out that some theoretical and methodological elements remain unchanged through the years: the hermeneutic circle and an idea of comprehension by which method is lived experience, that Spitzer inherits from Dilthey and the historicist tradition; a view of the relations among the individual, language and society which was typical of the Romantic Age; the emphasis, which is also romantic, on the organic unity of the work of art; the rejection of radical historicism (and the methodological issues that come with this rejection); and a philosophical eclecticism in which the inconsistency and the inaccuracy of some references (such as those to Freud, Heidegger, Croce, and structuralism) are apparently due to their indifference with regard to the more essential elements we have mentioned. At the centre of this constellation of ideas we find the notion of authorial identity. On one side, in fact, Spitzer always presupposes some authorial identity as the origin of the text and as the principle of its ordering; on the other side, this authorial identity wavers between the two poles of personality, in a psychological sense, and of a vision of the world, in a more intellectual sense. To settle this ambiguity, Spitzer points at the watershed of the xviii century, but it is a solution that doesn’t adequately account for historical change and for the relations between authorial identity and literary genres. If we examine some of Spitzer’s essays, anyway, we must recognize that his critical practice was more complex than his theory, nor can we say that today we have reached a much better understanding of the theoretical issues that are related to the notion of authorial identity.
