Comparable corpora in translator training and the translation of culture-specific items have long found their place in the field of Translation Studies. This, however, is not the case for pedagogical reflections on the adoption of comparable corpora in an intercultural perspective. We set out to address the question of how comparable corpora can be used to analyse discourse items that transmit information about culture and identity. We focus on those discourse items which can help to analyse the expression of cultural identity. And we examine how such an analysis may impact on a trainee translator’s choices and his or her conception of the translation unit?

Abstract

Comparable corpora in translator training and the translation of culture-specific items have long found their place in the field of Translation Studies. This, however, is not the case for pedagogical reflections on the adoption of comparable corpora in an intercultural perspective. We set out to address the question of how comparable corpora can be used to analyse discourse items that transmit information about culture and identity. We focus on those discourse items which can help to analyse the expression of cultural identity. And we examine how such an analysis may impact on a trainee translator’s choices and his or her conception of the translation unit?
L’utilisation de corpus comparables et le traitement des éléments culturels en traduction ont déjà trouvé leur place au sein des études traductologiques. Il resterait toutefois à y intégrer des réflexions pédagogiques centrées sur l’adoption de corpus comparables dans une perspective interculturelle. Afin de déterminer comment des corpus comparables pourraient être utilisés pour l’analyse de traits discursifs porteurs d’informations identitaires et culturelles, nous chercherons à déterminer les éléments du discours intervenant dans l’expression d’une identité culturelle, de même que l’impact qu’un tel repérage pourrait avoir sur les choix traductifs d’un apprenti traducteur/médiateur ainsi que sur sa conception de l’unité de traduction.
