Magnetostratigraphy uses the fossil record of Earth's magnetic polarity reversals to correlate rock sequences. Dating is also possible through correlation to age‐calibrated geomagnetic polarity time scales. The Quaternary contains ten main magnetic polarity reversals, from the base of the Brunhes Chron (∼0.781 Ma) to the top of the Gauss Chron (∼2.581 Ma). Polarity excursions of shorter duration (3–6 kya) may provide further resolution for dating and correlations.
