Painting marbles in Langobardia. From the heritage of the Late Antiquity, the sign of an artistic culture. A global survey of the artistic culture in Italy during the Lombard domination is still limited by two historiographical issues. On the one hand, scholars disagree about the role of the Lombard leadership, compared to the Carolingian one, in valuable artistic patronage. On the other hand, studies focused on the north side and on the south side of the Kingdom don’t interact with each other. The first issue could be solved by considering the Langobardia as a territorial scope, in which the new leadership is interacting with local know-how and traditions, therefore giving rise to peculiar artistic expressions irreducible to a single socio-political identity. A contribution to work out the second issue comes from painted dados imitating veined marbling and geometrical sectilia: the enquiry on patterns and working methods reveals close similarities from north to south, pointing out the full coherence of the artistic culture in the Langobardia.

Abstract
A contribution to work out the second issue comes from painted dados imitating veined marbling and geometrical sectilia: the enquiry on patterns and working methods reveals close similarities from north to south, pointing out the full coherence of the artistic culture in the Langobardia.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
