The essay deals with the processing of personal data for journalistic purposes. The first part of the essay is dedicated to the analyse of the directive 95/46/CE with specific regard to the exceptions provided for journalistic activities concerning data processing and the competences of Member States to determine the balance between data protection and freedom of speech. The second part of the contribution is dedicated to the new rules provided in the Regulation 679/2016/UE and its impact on previous national exceptions.
