The Object Oriented paradigm is considered a natural and effective approach for Image Processing and Analysis purposes. Nevertheless, despite its intuitive convenience, the use of object orientation within this complex realm has not undergone to a rapid growth as happened in other fields, where such paradigm has been introduced. The most part of reported applications deals with system architecture problems or is tailored to specific case-studies. In this paper, with the aim of developing a more comprehensive framework, we outline an Object Oriented model for Image Processing And Analysis, and we discuss how to address the critical issue of representing shape information. A preliminary prototype of the model is presented, and results of experimental work summarized.
