«Questi fia del tuo sangue» (GL X) : la profezia per Solimano: una sconfitta tra storia e destino

The prophecy addressed by Ismeno to Solimano in canto X of Gerusalemme Liberata is somehow rooted in the epic tradition of the predictions on hero’s progeny. Novertheless, since Solimano is the fiercest opponent of crusaders, the profecy is by itself anomalous. The prophecy, furthermore, is the centre of a web of cross references and antithesis, with clear transformations from the first stages of the poem up to the Conquistata. Such variations help better understand how Solimano’s appearance and role change through the different phases of the poem, as well as how the poem itself assumes different forms and values.

La profezia di Ismeno a Solimano nel canto X della Liberata si colloca per certi versi nel filone epico dei vaticinii sulla discendenza dell’eroe. Già il fatto che, però, Solimano sia invece il grande antagonista dei crociati rende la profezia anomala. L’episodio è inoltre al centro di un’architettura di rimandi e opposizioni, che cambia sensibilmente nella parabola dalle fasi più antiche della Liberata alla Conquistata. Tali variazioni illuminano il mutare della fisionomia e del ruolo di Solimano, nonché delle diverse concezioni del poema stesso.
