As Suet. Tib. 70-71 testifies, Tiberius was fluent in speaking, reading, writing Greek. He was also active in preserving post-callimachean poetry and in promoting studies about it. We can read a single epigram (AP 9.387) doubtfully ascribed to the emperor, but a parallel analysis of his literary models – Euphorio, Rhianus, Parthenius – leads to suppose that Tiberius wrote his poems of unknown genre in an epic language enriched with rare words and erudite allusions, typical of Hellenistic poets, perhaps dealing with erotic themes and showing a special taste for strangeness and mythological rarities, possibly applied to local history.

Abstract
As Suet. Tib. 70-71 testifies, Tiberius was fluent in speaking, reading, writing Greek. He was also active in preserving post-callimachean poetry and in promoting studies about it. We can read a single epigram (AP 9.387) doubtfully ascribed to the emperor, but a parallel analysis of his literary models – Euphorio, Rhianus, Parthenius – leads to suppose that Tiberius wrote his poems of unknown genre in an epic language enriched with rare words and erudite allusions, typical of Hellenistic poets, perhaps dealing with erotic themes and showing a special taste for strangeness and mythological rarities, possibly applied to local history.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
