The Dizionario dell’alimentazione / Dictionary of Food and Nutrition is an Italian-English-Chinese dictionary on Expo 2015 themes, suitable for use as a practical aid to communication during the Milan event, but – thanks to the scientifically sound criteria adopted in its compilation – also appropriate for use by anyone who deals with such themes in research and professional contexts. It was originally conceived within the framework of a project promoted by the Department of Studies in Language Mediation and Intercultural Communication of the University of Milan, financially and scientifically supported by the Confucius Institute of the University and by Autogrill SpA. In consideration of the research interests of the Department, which embrace languages for specific purposes, intercultural communication, discourse nalysis, corpus linguistics and the dynamics of professional communication in various contexts, it seemed natural for us to see Expo 2015 as an extraordinary opportunity to set up a project aimed at investigating the main theme of the event, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” from our own disciplinary perspective. In particular, we deemed that the most suitable perspective could be terminology, as this discipline is strictly geared to the catagorization of knowledge and at the same time it has the potential to produce as an offspin materials that may be of use within the context of Expo.
