Oriented by the neoclassical models and by the new scientific and philosophical European thought, Jovellanos’ and Meléndez Valdés’ poetry offers a compendium of Enlightenment ideals, manifesting at the same time a Preromantic sensibility. Jovellanos combines reason and feeling in the name of “good taste”; when he expresses the emotions of the lyrical “I”, he still repose on analogical correspondences cultivated in the Golden Age literature. Accepting the invitation to inspire himself in Nature for deciphering the great Book of the World, Meléndez Valdés amplifies the range of poetic forms and broadens their thematic scope. In his copious production, we can distinguish three main groups: the “song” for a stylized nature, the deist “hymn” for the wonders of the universe and the “weeping” for human suffering. In the latter kind of poems, appears a solitary self who anticipates the romantic archetypes of alienation. Although Meléndez is not really the inventor of the phrase “fastidio universal”, however he is able to describe the existential pain with expressive terms that will have a great influence on subsequent generations.

Abstract
Although Meléndez is not really the inventor of the phrase “fastidio universal”, however he is able to describe the existential pain with expressive terms that will have a great influence on subsequent generations.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
