The article traces the history of the three nineteenth-century editions of Philostratus'' Vitae sophistarum, by Carl Ludwig Kayser, with special attention to his philological method, developed in the crucial period that precedes the enunciation of Lachmann''s method, and to his relationship with Jacobs (of which an unpublished letter is here printed and commented).
