Bovine diarrhoea virus (BVD) occurred in three dairy herds (which had exchanged calves) between May 1995 and April 1996 in Verona Province. Three calves died from an acute haemorrhagic form of the disease, affecting the gastro-intestinal tract, in one herd. Two types of cytopathic bovine pestivirus were identified by using 8 monoclonal antibodies. The distribution of antibodies to these two types was investigated in all 3 herds.
