Although commercially grown apricot are in relatively small number compared to other stone fruits, possibility of synonymy might arise from mislabelling or multiplication for inappropriate purposes. This study was aimed at assessing possible cases of synonymy between some apricot cultivars grown in a germplasm collection. Three pairs of accessions were considered due to their relevant morphological similarity: ‘Aurora’ and ‘Early Blush’, ‘Bella di Imola’ and ‘Cricot’, ‘Lady Elena’ and ‘Tardif de Bordaneil 1’. Computer-assisted morphological evaluation of flowers (petals), leaves and fruit quality parameters was carried out along with a characterization at the molecular level with AFLP markers. No identity within the three pairs was shown despite a high degree of similarity by all markers. Comparison of results showed a good relation between the discriminating power of conventional (morphological and chemical) and molecular markers.
