Art historians are inclined to believe that Dion. Hal. De Isaeo 4 want to valorise Lysias and the stage of ancient art to which he is compared. The article demonstrates, by analyzing the aesthetic references of Dionysius, that the passage has descriptive and not evaluative purposes. The argument of Dionysus can be correctly understood only by placing it in the rhetorical context in which it was formulated.
