When, in 1992, Giovanni Testori published Gli Angeli dello sterminio, his extreme novel, seemingly nothing remained of the linguistic invention that had characterized the earlier In exitu (1988). Testori’s constant refusal of any stylistic predetermination widens the gap between the narrative structures of two stories of ruin: the first, however, is individual, while the second is the fragmented account of the downfall of Milan in the very early 1990s. Testori returns to prose in order to portray the city, but abandons the exasperated linguistic expressionism of In exitu, composed of a mixture of Italian, Latin, French, dialects, and fragments thereof. The linguistic texture of this extreme novel is Italian, though none of its registers are left untouched: from the highest to the lowest and most violent, where colloquial speech spills over into profanity. Moreover, Gli Angeli dello sterminio appears permeated by a kind of compulsion to repeat, both intratextual and intertextual — the latter echoing choices made in previous works and seemingly abandoned. The exploitation of repetition, which is not limited to the recurrence of certain rhetorical figures but also involves textual aspects and the repetition of particular images, seems to guarantee readability for the fragmented text.

Abstract
The exploitation of repetition, which is not limited to the recurrence of certain rhetorical figures but also involves textual aspects and the repetition of particular images, seems to guarantee readability for the fragmented text.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
