Dogme 95 represents one of the most disruptive and radical subversions of traditional cinematic language in recent decades. As a sort of Last New Wave of European cinema, the manifesto promoted an approach opposed to mainstream cinematic practices and closer to a minimalist, raw aesthetic, articulated through the ten rules of the "Vow of Chastity." The movement gained considerable visibility, but to this day only thirty-five films have received official Dogme 95 certification, signed by the movement's "founding brothers": Søren Kragh-Jacobsen, Kristian Levring, Thomas Vinterberg, and Lars von Trier. Nevertheless, even within certified works, several exceptions to the manifesto's rules can be found. One of the most striking concerns the use of music, despite the second rule of the Vow of Chastity, which states: "The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. (Music must not be used unless it occurs where the scene is being shot)." In this paper, I propose a classification of the "musical infringements" present in twenty certified Dogma 95 feature films, whether among the movement's most famous or most obscure works. I focus primarily on a quantitative meta-analysis that identifies the most recurrent solutions and their frequency, while also offering qualitative insights into a selection of the most striking examples. For these cases, I analyse the dramaturgical roles played by the musical infringements, thereby highlighting the importance of their presence despite the explicit prohibition established by the Vow.
