Two “novellaje” lost in a forest of notes. Vittorio Imbriani’s collections of fairy tales · In 1877, Vittorio Imbriani published the Tuscan and Milanese fairy tales he had collected in previous years in a single volume, faithfully reproducing the tellers’ dictation. The tales are overlaid with an extensive set of notes, in which erudite references to minor texts of the literary tradition abound. The essay oπers a reflection on the public and meaning of Imbriani’s work, drawing primarily on prefatory writings and correspondence. It illuminates the polyphonic play that characterises the 1877 Novellaja, in which the diπerent voices of the tellers alternate with the highly cultured authorial voice, also capable of diπerent modulations.

Nel 1877 Vittorio Imbriani pubblica in un unico corposo volume le fiabe toscane e milanesi che ha raccolto negli anni precedenti, riproducendo fedelmente il dettato delle narratrici. Ai racconti si sovrappone uno smisurato corredo di note, in cui abbondano i richiami eruditi a testi minori della tradizione letteraria. Il saggio propone una riflessione sulla destinazione e sul significato dell’operazione di Imbriani, attingendo in primo luogo agli scritti prefatori e ai carteggi. Ne risulta illuminato il gioco polifonico che connota la Novellaja del 1877, dove si alternano le voci diverse delle narratrici e la coltissima voce autoriale, anch’essa capace di modulazioni diπerenti
