In this Issue of Materiali di Estetica we present the first part of an interview in which Germanist Simonetta Sanna expounds her idea of literature as an exercise in which humans can seize the opportunity to engage with the values they have always claimed to pursue: tolerance, the ability to recognise one's own split parts projected onto the Other experienced as an enemy, negative affections, narcissism of small differences, self-indulgence, etc. Simonetta Sanna's passion for knowledge, evident throughout her work, is measured against great literature: from Lessing to Kafka, from Büchner to Keilson, from Döblin to Jung and on to contemporary writers. Her investigation always raises new questions, to which literature responds with further questions that help us to interpret the current upheavals in Europe and the West with a perspective that avoids consensus and conformism: an attitude learned from the authors to whom Sanna has dedicated and is still dedicating a lifetime of study
