David romantico, comico e tragico : Note su "Disgrace" di J. M. Coetzee

J. M. Coetzee’s Disgrace (1999) has become the object of a large amount of critical work. Critics responded not only to the urgency of the ethical and political themes addressed in the novel, but also to its com-plexity. A various intertext contributes to this complexity. Its main com-ponents can be identified in Romantic poetry and the aesthetic and genre categories of the comic and the tragic. Among these, the third one has not received from critics the same attention given to the other two. In my article I will try to show the presence of the tragic in the novel, but considering its relations with the comic and with Romantic poetry, espe-cially in relation to the theme of passions, and furthermore by resorting to the concept of “countervoice”, which Coetzee proposes in an inter-view with David Attwell.

Intorno a Disgrace (1999) di J. M. Coetzee si è accumulata negli anni una consistente letteratura critica, che ha risposto non solo all’urgenza dei temi etici e politici affrontati nel romanzo, ma anche alla sua com-plessità. A questa complessità contribuisce un molteplice intertesto, le cui componenti principali possono essere individuate nella poesia ro-mantica e nelle categorie estetiche e di genere del comico e del tragico. Fra queste, la terza non ha ricevuto dalla critica le stesse attenzioni ri-servate alle prime due. Nel mio articolo cerco quindi di tracciare la pre-senza del tragico nel romanzo, ma considerandone le relazioni con il comico e con la poesia romantica, soprattutto in rapporto al tema delle passioni, e inoltre ricorrendo al concetto di «countervoice», che Coetzee propone in un’intervista con David Attwell.
