This introductory essay frames the cluster Why Saba Today? Why Saba in the United States? by reassessing Umberto Saba’s position within twentieth-century Italian poetry and by arguing for his renewed relevance in contemporary and transnational contexts. Long regarded as a marginal or even anachronistic figure because of his adherence to traditional meters and an apparently simple, narrative diction, Saba is instead presented here as a poet whose commitment to poesia onesta (“honest poetry”) offers a distinctive response to modern anxieties. The essay situates Saba at the intersection of tradition and modernity, emphasizing his engagement with autobiography, psychoanalysis, civic responsibility, and everyday life. Particular attention is given to the Canzoniere as an evolving textual archive, shaped by revision, republication, and editorial reconfiguration, as well as to prose works such as Scorciatoie e raccontini, where Saba develops a complex reflection on history, politics, and the ethical role of poetry. Introducing Saba to American readers also means challenging dominant images of Italian twentieth-century poetry, often defined abroad through the paradigms of Montale’s hermeticism or Ungaretti’s lyric intensity. By contrast, Saba offers a model of poetry grounded in narrative clarity, psychological depth, and attention to marginal lives, capable of resonating with transatlantic debates on authenticity, identity, and the relationship between literature and lived experience. The cluster as a whole demonstrates how philology, textual criticism, and editorial history remain essential for understanding Saba’s work and for situating his voice within broader discussions of literary modernity.

Abstract
The cluster as a whole demonstrates how philology, textual criticism, and editorial history remain essential for understanding Saba’s work and for situating his voice within broader discussions of literary modernity.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
