he manuscript Boncompagni E 1 of the Vatican Apostolic Library is commonly considered the first nucleus of Pietro Bembo’s correspondence. The research currently underway demonstrates, howev- er, that it was originally an anthology prepared for private use by Vittore Soranzo, a disciple of Bembo. The latter came into possession of the manuscript only later and used it to increase the number of letters in his correspondence intended for printed publication.
