With the family. Figures of childhood in The Betrothed · The essay examines the figures of children and infants in the Novel (1840), also in relation to earlier versions and the iconographic set of the Guglielmini and Redaelli press. Some constants in the representation of childhood, such as the recursiveness of the food motif, are highlighted. In contrast to the orphan status of the two protagonists (however, they too are supported by a family), the children in the novel are always placed in an actual or substitute family. Manzoni does not resort to the narrative motif of the wandering orphan, so successful in nineteenth-century literature.

Il saggio esamina le figure di bambini e neonati nell’ultima redazione del romanzo, anche in relazione alle versioni precedenti e al corredo iconografico della stampa Guglielmini e Redaelli. Si pongono in evidenza alcune costanti nella rappresentazione dell’infanzia, come la ricorsività del motivo del cibo. In contrasto con la condizione di orfani dei due protagonisti (comunque anch’essi sorretti da una struttura familiare), i bambini nel romanzo sono sempre inseriti in una famiglia effettiva o supplente. Il motivo narrativo dell’orfano vagabondo, fortunato nella letteratura ottocentesca, sembra estraneo alle intenzioni manzoniane.
