The essay discusses the initiatives adopted by the U.S. federal government and some states regarding artificial intelligence. First, the study builds on the Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights and the recent Executive Order and then focuses on the participation of the United States in the negotiations that led to the adoption of the first treaty of international law on AI approved by the Council of Europe. The article, then, examines some emblematic cases of laws and bills, which are being established at the state level, with specific reference to the law passed by Colorado in May 2024. The aim of the analysis will then be the assessment of the rationale underpinning the described legislative initiatives in their relations with the European approach and the evaluation of the degree to which they are protective of the potentially detrimental effects of AI systems.
