This article aims at clarifying which criteria were followed in estimating the risk connected to maritime commerce, by taking into analysis the insurance industry in Renaissance Florence. Besides structural risks (related to itineraries, craft, weather, etc.) that were in some way predictable, contingent risks (connected to piracy, war), whose incidence was difficult to evaluate, had also to be taken into account. To give a plausible estimate two different way of reasoning were needed: a pseudo-frequentist approach, that rested on a proto-statistical way of thinking, and subsymbolic probability, that was grounded on forecasting made by those who were considered to be experienced in such field. This task was carried out by two “experts of risk” - the specialized broker and the leading insurer - to whom the rest of the transactors relied on in the complex effort of appraising the perils of the sea.

Abstract
This task was carried out by two “experts of risk” - the specialized broker and the leading insurer - to whom the rest of the transactors relied on in the complex effort of appraising the perils of the sea.Pubblicazioni consigliate
