Ptolemaic astronomy was born in Ptolemaic Egypt in the 3rd century B.C. from the en- counter between Pharaonic and Greek astronomy, the latter carrying elements of Babylonian science. The new astronomy turned out to be a mixture of elements of different origins which found the astronomical ceiling of the tradition of New Kingdom pharaohs as the support for its representation. Through the circulation of culture, typical of the Hellenistic and imperial world in which Alexandria played a role of absolute prominence, the astronomical ceilings spread across Europe and became typical elements of the Renaissance. This paper takes the history of Egyptian and Greek astronomy as a starting point to describe Ptolemaic astrono- my, born from the meeting of the first two, and highlights the influence of this science in cosmographic representations to the present day.
