Article 70A: Locating GREVIO in the realm of international and regional human rights monitoring mechanisms

This chapter purports to collocate the Istanbul Convention’s expert body (GREVIO) in the realm of other international and regional human rights monitoring mechanisms, by comparing their mandates and looking into similarities, differences, strengths and flows, as well as issues of connection and interrelations among them. The comparative analysis takes into consideration only expert bodies entrusted to supervise the implementation of the milestone instruments on women rights (such as the CEDAW, Convention of Belém do Pará, Maputo Protocol) and delves into the three main tasks exercised by the expert bodies at stake which can be described in terms of promoting, protecting and interpretating the rights enshrined in relevant instruments. Lastly, the chapter explores the synergies between GREVIO and other universal and regional bodies, in particular the UN expert bodies and the European Court of Human Rights.
