The history of 20th century Portuguese poetry is also a history of poets and poetry critics, and especially of poet-critics who reflected on their own poetry and on the poetry of other contemporary authors. A mutual suspicion runs through the history of Western 156 poetry: also in the history of Portuguese poetry in the twentieth century we can detect some versions of this suspicion whose actors are the poets and critics, and sometimes, the poet-critics. The history of this suspicion has to do with a double irritability: that of critics towards poets, and that of poets towards critics.
