Le inchieste di Nuovi Argomenti: riflessioni sulla letteratura nell'epoca dell'industria culturale

The journal «Nuovi Argomenti», founded by A. Carocci and A. Moravia in 1953, wisely exploited the formula of the “investigation topic”, along the lines of a virtual “round table” whose discussion is shaped by the different perspectives of the various interviewees. Starting from the first issues, until the closure of its second series in 1980, a topic often dealt with was the relationship between the arts and power, first of all 10 questions on “neocapitalismo e letteratura” (67-68, 1964), with articles by Arbasino, Chiaramonte, Eco, Guglielmi, Moravia, Pasolini, Siciliano, Vittorini. Drawing on answers published within “9 domande sul romanzo” (37, 1959), “8 domande sulla critica letteraria in Italia” (44-45, 1960) and “7 domande sulla poesia” (55-56, 1962), this essay attempts to investigate Italian intellectuals’ various opinions in the era of cultural industry, with special attention paid to the interaction between the literary world and mass society

La rivista «Nuovi Argomenti», fondata da Carocci e Moravia nel 1953, sfruttò sapien- temente la formula del “tema inchiesta”, simulando una tavola rotonda in cui la discus- sione prende corpo grazie alle prospettive delle diverse voci interpellate. Partendo dai primi fascicoli, fino alla conclusione della seconda serie della rivista avvenuta nel 1980, non infrequenti furono le inchieste che si occuparono del rapporto fra le arti e il potere, prima fra tutte 10 domande su “neocapitalismo e letteratura” (num. 67-68, 1964), con articoli di Arbasino, Chiaramonte, Eco, Guglielmi, Moravia, Pasolini, Siciliano, Vittori- ni. Si tenterà dunque – attingendo anche a interventi pubblicati all’interno di 9 doman- de sul romanzo (n. 37, 1959), 8 domande sulla critica letteraria in Italia (num. 44-45, 1960) e 7 domande sulla poesia (num. 55-56, 1962) – di indagare la posizione degli in- tellettuali nell’epoca dell’industria culturale, con particolare attenzione all’interazione fra mondo letterario e società di massa.
