Several college courses take place within the city prisons of Milan with mixed classes con- sisting of 20 inmates and the same number of on-campus students: these courses play an essen- tial role in the University of Milan’s Prison Education Program. Many of them deal with philo- sophical topics and do so by adopting a method with the main objective of developing the critical spirit in all participants. This article dwells on the overall spirit of this prison teaching initiative and on the peculiarity of bringing philosophy behind bars.

Abstract
