In 1849, after the fall of Venice, a new experience of emigration began. The patriots, according to the ancient Venetian tradition, started to move toward the great capitals but also toward the Mediterranean Sea. Corfu rapidly became the main destination for the patriots from where they set sail toward other Mediterranean sites. The essay investigates the strategies adopted by the Italians to integrate in the new communities, the solidarity networks, and the ways to continue the political struggle.
