We present a paper calculator, a cognitive artefact primarily addressed to primary school students, that can be made by students themselves and used to perform simple calculations and to memorize the multiplication table. Moreover, the calculator allows one to visualize geometrically the basic multiplication properties and simple numerical expression and it can be used as a compensatory tool for dyscalculic and visually impaired learners.

Abstract

We present a paper calculator, a cognitive artefact primarily addressed to primary school students, that can be made by students themselves and used to perform simple calculations and to memorize the multiplication table. Moreover, the calculator allows one to visualize geometrically the basic multiplication properties and simple numerical expression and it can be used as a compensatory tool for dyscalculic and visually impaired learners.
