ERUDIZIONE ANTIQUARIA E RICERCA ARCHEOLOGICA NELLA LOMBARDIA NORDOCCIDENTALE OTTOCENTESCA

This research focuses on four little-known scholars directly involved in antiquarian studies in northwestern Lombardy during the 19th century: Carlo Annoni (1795-1879), amateur epigrapher and patriotic provost of Cantù; Giovanni Ranchet (1834-1907), explorer of the pile dwellings of the Varese area and leading figure in the founding of the Museo Patrio of Varese; Vitaliano Rossi (1833-1890), first inspector of excavations and monuments in the territories north of Milan; Achille Varisco (1840-1909), linked to the documentary heritage of Monza Cathedral. The biographies are framed in the historical and cultural climate of the transition from the Lombardo-Veneto government to the state structure of post-unification Italy. Unpublished archival sources, preserved in Lombard and non-Lombard, public and private funds, support the research. Against the backdrop of the centralist ministerial thrusts promoted throughout Italy, the descriptive framework offers a cue to reexamine and specify aspects of a more bluntly museographic, collecting, normative and methodological nature.

La ricerca verte su quattro studiosi poco noti alla critica e direttamente coinvolti negli studi antichistici nella Lombardia nordoccidentale ottocentesca: Carlo Annoni (1795-1879), epigrafista dilettante e patriottico prevosto di Cantù; Giovanni Ranchet (1834-1907), esploratore delle palafitte del varesotto e protagonista nella fondazione del Museo Patrio di Varese; Vitaliano Rossi (1833-1890), primo ispettore agli scavi e monumenti nei territori dell’alto Milanese; Achille Varisco (1840-1909), legato al patrimonio documentario del Duomo di Monza. Le biografie sono inquadrate nella temperie storico-culturale propria della fase di passaggio dal Governo del Lombardo-Veneto alla compagine statale dell’Italia postunitaria, col supporto delle inedite carte d’archivio conservate in numerosi fondi, lombardi e non, pubblici e privati. Il quadro descrittivo offre lo spunto per riesaminare e puntualizzare aspetti di natura più schiettamente museografica, collezionistica, normativa e metodologica sullo sfondo delle spinte ministeriali centralistiche promosse sull’intero territorio italiano.
