The contribution examines P. Oxy 33.2673 (= HGV P. Oxy 33.2673 = Trismeghistos 16878) and the singular case of Aurelius Ammonio, an illiterate reader of the Church of Chysis, according to the confiscation report dated to the Diocletian’s “Great persecution” (February 5, 304). Comparing this document with similar cases of coherent chronology originating from Christian Africa, the contribution aims to offer a broader interpretation of this singular circumstance. The document attests to the progressive consolidation of clerical offices, less and less tied to their functional nature but now primarily pertaining to the definition of the leadership of these Churches.
