The results of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study showed that, in 2019, 8% of deaths worldwide were trauma related. Moreover, the GBD reported the nonfatal sequelae (disabilities and handicaps) among trauma patient survivors, who are often healthy young individuals that will suffer lifelong disabilities as a result of the injuries sustained.
